In her childhood, Hardwick was adopted. She worked as a dancer and Playboy model to put herself through college. She earned a psychology degree at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, a Master of Arts at Pepperdine University, and a Ph.D. An autopsy determined Hardwick was strangled and thrown off her apartment balcony. Authorities believe Gareth Porterhouse killed Amie Hardwick due to his infatuation with her.
